The International Awards for Art Criticism Publication Launch & forthcoming Prize Announcement (IAAC 5), the RCA School of Arts & Humanities is pleased to invite writers, curators and artists: Philomena Epps, Emily LaBarge, Taylor Le Melle,Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad from The White Pube, Chris Fite-Wassilak, conversation lead by Brian Dillon (writer) to discuss the status of art criticism now in terms of a creative writing tool and to ask what they as critics owe to artists, both in the sense of debt and responsibility.
Philomena Epps is an independent writer and art critic based in London. Her writing has been published by Art-Agenda, ArtForum, Elephant, Frieze, and MAP, among others. She is also the founding editor and publisher of Orlando.
Emily LaBarge is a writer
based in London, where she teaches at the Royal College of Art. Amongst other
publications, she has written for the Guardian, Tate Etc.,
the LA Review of Books, Bookforum, the Times
Literary Supplement, The Photographers' Gallery and Witte
de With Review. She is the London correspondent for Montreal-based arts and
culture journal esse arts + opinions.
Taylor Le Melle is a curator and writer based in London and is part of the artist workers’ cooperative Not/no.w.here, whose programme will launch in summer 2018. With Chris Fite Wassilak and Lizzie Homersham, Taylor facilitates the Art Magazines Reading Group who will next meet at PEER Gallery on 11 June to discuss Afterall #45. Alongside Rowan Powell, Taylor runs PSS, a publisher of printed material which has recently launched Daniella Valz Gen’s poetry chapbook Subversive Economies and Victoria Sin’s performance relic, A View From Elsewhere. pssss.co
The White Pube is the collaborative identity of Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad under which they write criticism and sometimes curate. It is based at thewhitepube.com and on Instagram and Twitter as @thewhitepube. The duo publish a new text every Sunday in the form of exhibition reviews and occasionally baby essays or podcasts, working from their respective cities of London and Liverpool.
Chris Fite-Wassilak is a writer and critic based in London. He is a regular contributor to Apollo, Art Monthly, Art Papers and frieze; his writing has also appeared in Art & Australia, Artforum.com, Flash Art, Monopol, Rhizome and Tate Etc.. He is a contributing editor of ArtReview, and co-organiser with artist Anne Tallentire of the event ‘hmn’. His short book of essays, Ha-Ha Crystal (2016) is published by Copy Press.
Brian Dillon is the head of the writing at the RCA School of Arts and Humanities – Dillon a writer and critic, and UK editor of Cabinet magazine. He is the author of several books of criticism, fiction, memoir and creative nonfiction. He contributes regularly to art magazines, newspapers and journals in the UK, USA and Ireland.
